Beagling!

We're planning a joint meet for Rockbridge Hunt with the Octorara Beagles. This should be the perfect outing for members to bring along their non-hunting family members. Beagles are smaller than foxhounds but they are scent-hounds and hunt in a very similar style. They hunt rabbits or hares. The hunting is followed on foot -- none of those pesky horses! There is a huntsman to handle the hounds. (At Octorara the MB and huntsman are the same person.) There are whippers-in. And the followers are called "the field" and are led by a fieldmaster. Followers are expected to be quiet, well-behaved, and orderly. As with foxhunting, there will be people who sit on a hill and listen and there will be others who follow more closely, sometimes at a run. Each pack has its own uniform, just like in foxhunting, but attire will be quite casual for a day like this.

The MB (Master of Beagles) at Octorara is Larry Bright. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the National Beagle Club of America. His picture is in the current Hunt Roster issue of The Chronicle of the Horse. In that issue, there's an entry for each recognized pack of hounds, whether foxhounds, bassets or beagles. And each pack's territory is described briefly. Here's the entry for Octorara Beagles -- "The country is in Floyd, Va., an area of steep hills, deep hollows and thick cover hunted with the kind permission of the local moonshiners." I think we're going to have a fun day!

We're trying to set up a meet in Rockbridge Hunt territory on a Sunday afternoon between Thanksgiving and Christmas. (Their fall calendar is about as full as ours.) And we'll probably plan a tailgate afterward. Keep an eye on the email list and keep checking the hunt line (462-1113).

For more information, ask the MFH, Cindy Morton

Hunt Kick-Off Party

Our first ever Kick-Off Pig Roast was a great success due to perfect weather and a wonderful turnout. Everyone brought wonderful side dishes and desserts. A great big thank you to Laura Jarvis for arranging the main course; that was "SOME PIG"! Also, I would like to thank David Bolen and Lauren Keating for providing the refreshments, Pam Moskal for the festive decorations, Laura Arnold, Lou Dooley for helping me set up and clean up. Also, thanks to Barbara Burks, who ran to the store at the last minute due to a paper plate shortage.

See you in the hunt field,

Sandra Worthy

Fixture Change

It's likely that we'll change the time for the meet on Dec 16. Oak Ridge Fox Hunt Club was scheduled to hunt with us in October but the date didn't work out.

They're planning to come on December 16. However, they regularly hunt on Sunday mornings. If we hunt at 2:30, by the time we finish the breakfast it makes for a very long day for visitors. Keeping in mind the traveling, we'll probably change that meet to 10 or 11 o'clock.

Please check the Hunt Line, 462-1113.

Rockbridge Hunt Horse Show

Joan Alberti has announced that she is retiring from managing the Rockbridge Hunt Horse Show. Joan has run this show for several years now, at Fancy Hill Farm and recently at Hollins University. There have been times that the horse show was the biggest fundraiser of the year for the Hunt. No matter how much money it makes, a horse show is always a big undertaking. During Joan's management, the show has been recognized by the Southwestern Virginia Hunter/Jumper Association. Most of the local competitors exclusively attend these shows to compete for year-end awards.

Rockbridge Hunt has a long, long history of hosting a horse show. It's been held at a variety of locations over the years. When Viola Wise was Master, she hosted the horse show at her farm, Gray Fox. In the 1980s the horse show was held at the Hunt's property in the riding ring.

There have been several times when a hiatus was called and we didn't host an annual horse show. This appears to be another of those times. I'm confident that the horse show will return, in one form or another. In the mean time, we owe Joan our sincere gratitude for her hard work. She has been the Rockbridge Hunt's representative in the horseshow world, virtually single-handed, and she's done it with efficiency, grace, and style.

Needless to say, we also owe a huge debt to Hollins University. They have done more than merely allow the use of their facility; they've provided invaluable help for the enterprise. The staff at Hollins is a class act, through and through.

Save the Date!!!
Rockbridge Hunt Ball

A HUGE thanks to Anne Layman for agreeing to head the Rockbridge Hunt Ball for 2007! This event has been extraordinary in the past and we look forward to another great evening on Saturday February 17th. This is a perfect opportunity to bring friends or relatives to an evening of great food, music and company.

We challenge you to bring at least one person that has not attended the ball in the past with you this year. Start thinking about items you would like to donate for the silent auction. Remember how much the hunt club and the hounds benefit from the proceeds of this everning!
